Livestock & Food Security

Livestock plays a role in all aspects of our regional food security in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa: production, stability of supply, access and quality. It is a significant source of income and an economic contributor to the GDP. Livestock represents a year-round asset, a readily available source of food or income, and a source of pride, social values and status.

Turkey and the Gulf countries are heavy consumers of livestock products with most of their needs being met through imports (livestock products import estimated at $8.6 billion USD in the Gulf countries, in 2011*). At the other side, Africa natural resources support rich livestock population. However, consumption and import patterns are not uniform due to import restrictions.
